The Oglala Lakota College Library, the only public library on Pine Ridge Reservation, received a grant allowing it to purchase a van and hire a staff person to drive to all reaches of the reservation and visit each Head Start center and Early Childhood center – a combined total of 600 children – at least once a week to expose them to books and reading. The grant also has allowed the OLC library to purchase English and Lakota books for its permanent collection to encourage library use by the children and their families.
Many of the Head Start kids have no books at home and the library would like to give each child at least one book of her/his own per month, to encourage the parents to read to their children and instill a love of reading in the kids. Unfortunately, the library doesn’t have the resources to do so and the library director has asked for our help. Although this is a big endeavor that will make a small dent in the number of books needed, it is so important to the development of the children.
If you can donate any of the books listed below, please let me know which you are donating so I can keep a tally here. Other preschool books are acceptable as well if you have some new or gently used books you’d like to send.
