Thank Yous from Oglala Lakota CASA

Dear Friends:

Thank you for your recent donations of backpacks filled with school supplies. We appreciate the opportunity to be able to give these to the children that are in need. Please know that the children we serve are in the system through no fault of their own. The children who received them most likely had to leave their homes to go to a safe place.

The backpacks and supplies will be of help to the children who need them to go to school and who need them to put their belongings into.

I also want to take this opportunity to give a tremendous Wopila (which means thanks) to those of you who have given generous monetary donations as well. Program costs covered by our grant funding are very, very limited. Your contributions have continued to help in providing the powerful voice for the children who are affected by physical and sexual abuses.

You are so kind to support the needs of OLCASA and the children we serve.

Dear Chris and Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation:

Greetings to you all. I am writing this as a “Thank You” for the most recent contributions of Easter books that you donated and sent to the Oglala Lakota CASA program for the children. We were able to give them out to the children we serve and also to the children who had family members participate in our most recent event “Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Awareness” walk and activities on April 23rd.

Oglala Lakota CASA gives our sincere gratitude to those of you who have continued to donate and provide monetary donations as well. It has been a very long, cold winter on the homeland of the Pine Ridge Reservation. Your most thoughtful donations have helped immensely with our work in delivering services to the children. These children are the most vulnerable who are in the “system” through no fault of their own.

Again, please know that you are very beneficial to the OL CASA Program.

Sincerely and for the children,

Arlana Bettelyoun

Dear Chris and Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation,

Greetings to you! We are writing this as a huge thank you – Lela Wopila Tanka Icici Yelo (we are very grateful to you).

We sincerely extend our warmest gratitude to you for your donations of Christmas gifts. A delivery has been made to many of those children who live far out in the districts and to those children who live in residential homes across the State. Some of the gifts were also given to children whose mothers are victims of domestic violence. Please know that everything you donated is helping to make a brighter day for the children who are in need.

Due to no fault of their own, the children who are court-appointed to our program experience trauma, neglect and abuse. The services that we provide to the children help them realize that there is goodness and hope in the world around them.

To those of you who made monetary donations, please know that your efforts will help provide needed supplies and services to the children.

Again we thank you! Everything that was donated was very needed and appreciated.

Sincerely,

Arlana Bettelyoun

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people — appalling, and largely ignored — compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson.
