Dear Friends of Pine Ridge,

I would like to send out a heartfelt handshake and a big Thank you to each and every one of you that have given generously to our Easter donation drive for hams, and Easter items and decorations. Our students and families were very very happy to receive these items!

The classrooms utilized the decorations and created festive spaces for the children. All students partook in an Easter egg hunt with their baskets and goodies! The families all received their full hams to share at home for their Easter dinner. There was enough for everyone! The food we’ve received will be given out tonight at our Family Fun Night.

I cannot thank you all enough. You all have made a difference in our community! Thank you Friends of Pine Ridge!

Respectfully,

Alice Phelps

Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation,

I’d like to thank you all for the Valentine’s Drive. Our students enjoyed the many wonderful items to share in this fun holiday!

There were plenty of Valentine’s Day cards for everyone. The candy, cookies, and candy bags were enough to go around to all students and also for their classroom parties.

The decorations brought a happiness to the classrooms and hallways–the scene was magical! Thank you all for your generous donation to this drive.

Respectfully,

Alice Phelps

Friends of Pine Ridge,

A BIG THANK YOU to you all for your generous donation towards the Firewood Drive! Everyone in our community is soooo thankful! Wood is still being delivered. Families are thankful and are receiving the truck loads of wood for their source of heat. We are expecting another cold spell by the middle of the weekend so are working hard to ensure wood is delivered to all families by then!

We will be sending pictures from the wood vendors. They said they have some to send me to forward on. Thanks for the difference you all make in the lives of our students, families, and communities!

Respectfully,

Alice Phelps
Wounded Knee District Principal

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people — appalling, and largely ignored — compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson.
