Thank You Letters from Little Wound School

Friends of Pine Ridge,

I would like to give a huge thank you to Chris for setting up the donation drive for my classroom and for everybody who participated. I was worried that my classroom lacked the materials required to meaningfully plan out the biology class I will be teaching next year. As soon as Chris set up the donation drive books and resources started pouring in from donors across the country.

I would like to personally thank everybody who donated to this project. I was amazed at how fast resources came in that I could use to begin planning. The resources will play a crucial role in providing my students with the positive learning experience that they all deserve.

Thank you all so much!

Dear Friends of Pine Ridge,

With school beginning to draw to a close, I have spent a lot of time reflecting on the school year—on the successes we have had and the places we still need to grow. As I consider the successes, I smile to know that you have been an invisible but important part of them.

Thank you for your most recent drive of the audiobooks. While I know all students will be clamoring for the chance to listen, these audiobooks will be of special help to our most struggling readers. Novels that would typically be out of reach for these students because of the decoding challenges they pose will now be accessible to them. These students who often read books several levels below their grade level will now have the opportunity to enjoy and discuss grade-level texts even as they continue to work on their decoding. What could be more motivating to keep them working on those basic skills?

Thank you again for all that you make possible for our students.

Sincerely,

Shannon Brady

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your continued support of literacy at Little Wound School!

Over the course of the year my third grade class has read several books about slavery, the Underground Railroad, and civil rights (many of which have been donated by you in the past). This Wednesday we read Freedom River, one of the books that was recently donated. It was incredible to see students ask insightful questions about the book and make connections between the various books. In the back of my mind, I smiled, thanking you—people all around the country and world who care enough to make that moment possible.

Thank you, also, for the Dragon Slayers Academy and Spiderwick Chronicles books. These are two new, very fun series for students that our students wouldn’t have access to otherwise. But, thanks to you, we now have a complete set of each in the library and even a few extra to put in classroom libraries as teasers to get students interested.

We truly appreciate all that you do for our school and the children of Pine Ridge.

With Gratitude,

Shannon Brady

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people — appalling, and largely ignored — compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson.
