Thank You Letters from Crazy Horse School

February 20, 2013 by FoPRR

Dear Friends of Pine Ridge,

I would like to convey my heartfelt thanks for your support of Crazy Horse School. Never could I have anticipated the quick and energetic response to my request for class sets of scientific calculators for the high/middle school math and science classrooms. Having quality calculators on hand is a huge relief for me personally and has already increased the efficiency of my classroom.

I am tremendously grateful to both Chris at Friends of Pine Ridge for her efforts in making our need known as well as to all who donated from across the country. I cannot stress enough the difference you have made in how our math and science classrooms operate and how much our students appreciate having good calculators to use every day. I am humbled by your support of math and science education here at Crazy Horse School.

Thank you again!

Dear Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation,

To the wonderful people who donated items for Easter—I wish I could send you pictures of the smiles on our children’s faces. We took all of the items donated, added a few more “cello” bags to make enough for everyone, and put together Easter surprises for every child. The weather cooperated so we could hide the eggs outside and designated areas for K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 to search for them. At the very end of the hunt, the children were exhilarated and didn’t want to leave.

Your generosity definitely made this special time of the year even more special to them. Thank you again of remembering us with your donations!

P.S. Almost forgot–our elementary hallways were decorated from floor to ceiling with the coloring sheets–what a festive atmosphere!

Dear Friends of the Pine Ridge,

In the past few months, your generosity has reached the nurse’s office at Crazy Horse School. Our young ladies have benefited from the personal hygiene products you have sent and they are greatly needed. The nurse has expressed her gratitude for the ice packs, ace wraps, bandaids, thermometers, neosporin ointment, headlice shampoo, tongue depressors, and other items that restocked her shelves.

All of the items were needed, sincerely appreciated, and have been put to use by many of our children. The cough drops were also needed as we continue to experience many illnesses that cause sore throats.

From the staff at the Crazy Horse School, we want to THANK YOU for touching our lives from the much needed supplies you sent.

Dr. Alberta Moore, Principal

Dear Friends of the Pine Ridge Reservation,

The donations you provided our school just goes to prove there are many, many generous and kind people in our country. Our staff took the items donated and turned the afternoon of February 14 into a “mini-carnival” for the students.

We had face painting, fish pond, mini-ball hoop shoot, cupcake walk, and cookie decorating booths for the children to participate in. Once the carnival was done, they went back to their homerooms to enjoy the coloring sheets, exchange valentines, and let some of the “sugar” wear off before going home.

Many of my older students commented that this was the BEST Valentine’s day they could remember–all because of the generous donations you provided to our students. Thank you for adopting our children and providing items to make this a day to remember.

Greetings,

I had intended to write to everyone who sent us books, but — happily — we have been overwhelmed by your generosity. I can not keep up. (That is what I call a good problem.)

This has been wonderful for us. As I told you, we have not had the funds to buy any books for the past four years. Since we always lose some books–mostly the most popular ones, of course–our library has fallen into some disrepair.

The books that you all have sent us have added a great deal to our library. I appreciate all of them. Our kids love them. Many of these books have never been on the shelves; they are checked out as quickly as I can get them ready.

Again, thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Sincerely, Robert Vrchota, Librarian

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people — appalling, and largely ignored — compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson.
