Thank Yous from Tusweca Tiospaye 2007

Dear Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation,

I would like to say thank you for your continued support of Tusweca Tiospaye and our mission of revitalizing the Lakota language by creating new generations of Lakota language speakers.

We have received 10 copies of each Lakota language picture book we asked for help in obtaining; Pispiza Owayawa Iyaye/Prairie Dog Goes to School and Thathanka na Wata/The Buffalo and the Boat. These books will play a vital role in our Lakota language program. Each child in our program will receive a copy of each Lakota language picture book, which they will use in the Lakota language classes and at home with their families.

With the books we are not only teaching the Lakota language, but also improving reading skills and bringing families together.

Lila Wophila Thanka! Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Michael Carlow Jr., Executive Director

Dear Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation,

TUSWECA (two-swe-cha) TIOSPAYE (tee-o-shpa-yea) is a Native 501(c)(3) on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, home of the Oglala Sioux (Lakota) Tribe that is devoted to the promotion and strengthening of the Lakota language.

We work toward fulfilling our goal of revitalizing the Lakota language by creating new generations of Lakota language speakers by offering year-round Lakota language classes to the wakanyeja (children) and their tiwahe (families).

Through your contributions, and positive support, the children of the Pine Ridge Reservation are well on their way to revitalizing their language and reclaiming their culture. This will ultimately lead to a better, more prosperous future for the Oglala Sioux (Lakota) Tribe.

For your generosity and support, Tusweca Tiospaye sincerely thanks you, the Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation. Lila Wophila Thanka! (Thank you very much for your support!)

Sincerely,

Michael Carlow Jr.
Executive Director

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people — appalling, and largely ignored — compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson.
