Thank Yous from Red Cloud High School 2005

Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation,

I wanted to send you a note, thanking you for the books you sent. My freshman class uses numerous titles as they are involved with the Accelerated Reading program. With this curriculum, students read books of their choice that have been approved by the Accelerated Reading program. They read them independently and then take a test over the book. Each book has an amount of points attached to it. According to how they do on the test, they receive points. These points add up to an individual goal that each student has.

My goal with this program is to increase the students’ reading comprehension. This was proved out last year when 95% of my students increased their reading levels by two grade levels or more. In order to keep improving this program for my kids, I need to continue to increase my library. That is why the books you sent are so appreciated. Without budgeted money to purchase any new books this year, the books you sent are providing a wider range of titles for my students to read. Your generosity is helping my students to prepare for the future. Thank you so much!!!

Sincerely,
Susan Daniels

Dear FOPRR,

I am writing this letter to thank the people that have donated to the Red Cloud Senior Class Trip. Many are not aware that Red Cloud Indian School is a private Catholic school in which the school relies on people such as the Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation.

The seniors of the Red Cloud High School have raised funds throughout the year for graduation and their senior trip; although they have raised money it wasn’t enough to cover the cost of their senior trip as most of the funds went toward their graduation.

It was your generosity that has made it possible for the seniors to enjoy one last trip together as a senior class. The senior class is very grateful to all who donated. Again, I would like to say Thank You for your generosity and your compassion.

Sincerely,
Charles Pourier

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people — appalling, and largely ignored — compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson.
