Thank You Letter from Oglala Lakota College

February 13, 2013 by FoPRR

February 8, 2013

Dear Chris and Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation;

Pilamaya ye (Thank You) so much for the donations of binders and Post-it notes to start off the spring semester. The students have appreciated your thoughtfulness and support. Every time they receive something that they don’t have to buy it allows them to get just a little closer to their goal of graduating and becoming a registered nurse.

We currently have 11 second year students and 15 first year students and have 3 weeks already completed. The second year students are doing medical-surgical clinical rotation and first year students are doing OB and mental health clinical rotations plus class work. We have 2 good classes of students and hope they all have a successful semester.

Thanks again!

Joan Nelson

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people — appalling, and largely ignored — compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson.
