January 2, 2019 by FoPRR

Every year we provide the incoming nursing students at Oglala Lakota College with rolling backpacks and various school supplies.  Here is a thank-you for our 2018 efforts!

9/3/18

Hi Chris,

Here are some pictures for you from our admitting class. A huge thank you for all of your supporters, which in turn become ours! This is such a tremendous way to start our new class off with everything they need to be successful in their studies.  We have a truly amazing new class just starting – full of excitement and enthusiasm for the school year and for the nursing profession. Your Foundation there helps in more ways than you will ever know!

Dear Donors,

We are getting ready to begin another school year already.  I would like you to know that we had to take a lot more cuts this year than last.  It broke my heart to know that our students would be going without some things this year.  When I wrote to Friends of Pine Ridge, I didn’t expect this much help and support.  Once again, our cabinets are full of supplies and we are waiting for our doors to open up again, to hear the laughter and excitement in our building. It is because of your dedication and support that we are so successful and I truly want to thank you for your friendship.

Many times I wonder how we are going to get by and then you jump in and make everything happen. Thank you so much for being here for us always.  We really appreciate your help.  You will always be in our hearts and prayers for good health and happiness. Wopila! (Thank you). God Bless you all.

Sincerely,
Theresa Lessert, Principal
Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School

Here’s a thank-you letter from Etta Shirley, the Principal of Little Singer Community School on the Navajo Nation,  for our donation drive for school supplies.

August 6, 2018

Good morning Chris,

We had a wonderful morning – welcomed 92 students back to Little Singer School with banners, balloons and music. We used a lot of the materials that you all have sent to the school – each child got a backpack stuffed with school supplies. We truly appreciate what you all are doing for our students here in Arizona. We had some parents on site too and shedding tears over what their child was getting on their first day at Little Singer School – all thanks to you all for your donations.  We might not be able to say thank you in person but we are thankful for every little donation.

We are already planning on using the cakes for July, August and September birthdays in the Fall – we received 20 transfer students because they heard of the wonderful things that we do with our students, we cant do it without your help. THANK YOU !!!!!

Mrs. Shirley, the staff at Little Singer Community School and parents

We donated 75 twin beds (frame, mattress, mattress pad, sheets set, pillow and comforter) to students at Wounded Knee District School who were sleeping on the floor. Here’s a thank you letter from the Principal.

6/27/18

Friends of Pine Ridge,

I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the Bed drive!  These beds have been delivered by our wonderful Social worker and Counselor on staff, going straight into homes as soon as they arrive.  There are many students in need as there are multiple families in one home and these beds brings ownership and belonging to the students. They are so happy and grateful to receive the beds, mattresses, sheet set, pillows, and blankets.

Thank you all for your compassionate hearts in meeting the needs of our students.  They will remember this and will take care of these as well as have a good night’s rest ready for the next day! Thank you all!

Respectfully,

Alice Phelps
Wounded Knee District School Principal

Every year in February we celebrate FoPRR’s birthday by sending birthday supplies to some of the schools on Pine Ridge Reservation and the Navajo Nation.  Here is one of the thank you letters.

Good afternoon Chris,

On behalf of the staff, parents and students, thank you so much. We had assemblies in the gym and celebrated each child, parent or staff that had a birthday for that month. The kids loved singing the birthday song and all the decorations that came with the donations were all shared among the students. The students look forward to receiving a package; they all run to the office where the boxes get dropped off . They are so special and I am glad that we have friends out there that care. Thank you.

This thank you is for our donation drive for Our Lady of Lourdes School for the playground equipment and games that we donated to the kids.

5/23/18

Dear Donors,

I want to thank you all for the support you have given to our students at Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary. By donating new PE/sports equipment, our students have the chance to have a variety of new games and activities to play.  The giant games will be such a welcome during our many rainy days and snow days when our students are stuck inside for recess.  Our staff were filled with excitement when they saw the variety coming in. They too got excited about indoor recess.  Lol.

There are so many things we would love to do for our students, but with the cuts having to be made we just fall so short.  With your love and support, you are the ones who help us pick up many of the broken pieces that otherwise may have had to be left behind.

Thank you so much for your dedication and support you continue to give to our students.  We know we could never do this without you.  You are so kind and generous and will be held forever in our hearts and prayers. Enjoy your summer.

Sincerely,
Theresa Lessert, Principal

Wopila Tanka to the Friends of Pine Ridge for their generosity.  The rakes have already been put to use as we are ending our community clean up and begin planting vegetables and flowers.  I hope we can send pics of our projects.  Thank you for being a friend.

Friends of Pine Ridge,

I would like to thank you all for a successful school year!  You have all brought smiles to our students with the goodie bags.  These made our children feel very special as they received a goodie bag each month.  We here at Wounded Knee District School are very grateful for all the time and effort that you all have put in to make a difference in the lives of our students.  They enjoy and look forward to the goodie bags each month. Dear FoPRR Room Mothers,

We are at the end of our school year already. By far, this year has been a blessing to have dedicated, sweet friends such as yourselves who have taken the time each month to send care packages to each class room.  Thank you very much for your thoughtfulness.  These boxes usually arrived when the students needed an uplift.  This year was an extremely difficult and emotional one after losing one of our own students, yet you still continued to send rays of sunshine each month to help us through.

You are held in our hearts and prayers for good health and happiness as you will never know the happiness you have given to us this year.  Thank you doesn’t seem enough.  Just know that everyone appreciates your kindness and were amazed to see the boxes come month after month.  Thank you for your kindness.  We love you all so much.

Sincerely,
Theresa Lessert
Our Lady of Lourdes School Principal

A thank you letter from Etta Shirley, the Principal of Little Singer Community School on the Navajo Nation, for our donations.

5/15/18

Hi Chris,

Today is a bright warm day and in between my break from a board meeting. I talked to the parents that came to our evening student presentation on Navajo toys that they developed. But my discussion with them is the thought of giving and that we have a lot of people from all over the country, donating to our children through out the last 2-3 years and what a wonderful blessing it is to know that there are people out there that care. That care to give up their time to send an item with love to children here in Arizona.

They all said thank you from the bottom of their hearts, they couldn’t ask for anything more. The way that you have been supplying our children with school supplies, jackets, shoes, underwear, hair accessories, socks, etc, just means a lot to the families.

So thank you for all that you do for families that really have a need.. some of them work but they have big families and with all your help, they are able to keep up with their children’s needs. Even the cakes that are sent, are given to the mothers to bake for their children, sometimes, the kitchen will bake some of the cakes and all the children eat it at school. THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!

Etta Shirley
Little Singer Community School Principal

A thank you letter from the Principal of Wounded Knee District School for our winter gear donation drive.

4/3/18

Friends of Pine Ridge,

I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart!  It has been a tough winter season here in South Dakota. We are still experiencing this winter weather with no school today due to the winter snow storm and icy road conditions. Your generous donations of blankets, afghans, sleeping bags, hats, sweaters, scarves, and monetary donation for fire wood have been very welcome! Our students and families have received these items and have been able to enjoy the warmth of their homes during the treacherous conditions. These items have gone a long way and have allowed our students to come to school sound and prepared to learn. I cannot thank you all enough for your generosity! Thank you Friends of Pine Ridge!

Respectfully,
Alice Phelps
Wounded Knee District School Principal

April 28, 2018

Hi Chris,

This is so wonderful. We are getting ready to bake and decorate for a huge celebration at the end of our school year. We are always so thankful for this help. Our students enjoy this big celebration each Spring. I would truly like to thank you all for your generosity. This is a great way to acknowledge every student for their birthday and also share in a sweet treat at the end of our school year. We are in the process of putting a big slideshow together if all the kids throughout the year and all the joys we have experienced. It truly is a great day for all of us to share with your kindness. Again, thank you all for thinking of us again. We are so blessed to have you as our friends.

Sincerely,
Theresa Lessert

I would like to thank all that sent the birthday supplies for our students. It is always fun to be able to celebrate with our children and Birthdays are big celebrations here on the reservation. We saved all the celebratory noise makers for the day of school. We thought it would be extremely fun to have all our student blow them on the last day of school to signify another year of knowledge completed! 🙂 Again, it warms my heart the generosity of all that send our students all the wonderful supplies. We so appreciate it. Wopila (thank you).

Friends of Pine Ridge,

I would like to thank you all for you generous Birthday donation drive for our children!  They were all able to have birthday cake, decorations, and cards for the students.  This made every birthday extra special. If the parents couldn’t make the cakes we made them and took to their classrooms where they were able to celebrate their birthday with their classmates.  It made them feel very special!  Thank you for making their special day that much more special!

We appreciate all that you do for our children of Wounded Knee District school.

A thank-you from the Oglala Lakota Children’s Justice Center for our 218 $20.18 donations drive.

April 10, 2018

A heartfelt thank you to all of you who donated money to the Children’s Justice Center and to the children whom we serve.  This helps in so many ways! Also, to those of you who sent holiday (Christmas, Valentine’s, Easter) gifts and treats, we aren’t allowed to post too much because of confidentiality but the children have been extremely happy when they receive these. Please know that your generosity is a great way to help and share in our work here at the Children’s Justice Center. Pilamiya ye (thank you).  We are grateful for your contribution.

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people — appalling, and largely ignored — compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson.
