Attn.: Chris

Dear Friends of Pine Ridge:

We, the administration and staff of Lakota Oyate Wakanyeja Owicakiyapi “LOWO” express our sincere gratitude for our many friends who contributed to the summer clothing drive. On behalf of the families and children who received the clothing we wish to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We realize that there are many people who have good hearts with a caring spirit. You have eased the burdens of many families and have added a bit of happiness to the lives of our children. We will offer our prayers for “wozani” (health, happiness and well-being) for all those individuals and families who have given of their hearts and resources.

Wopila Tanka! A Big Thank You!

Attn.: Chris

Dear Friends of Pine Ridge:

In the words of one grandmother receiving four backpacks loaded with school supplies, “It’s like Christmas, there are so many nice things in these bags!” She was thrilled to receive the backpacks. She also commented that when she went to school, all she was allowed to purchase were a couple of pencils and a notebook. We are so thankful to all our donor friends and families who contributed to the backpack drive. The children were thrilled!

Thank you to all who contributed time, energy, and monetary resources to provide for the children we serve in LOWO. It is very difficult for many tribal families to provide for the basic needs of their children in a time of economic uncertainty and rising prices. Your gifts make life a little less stressful and certainly the children are happier as a result of receiving the backpacks with school supplies and other helpful items.

In addition, a big thanks to Chris for making this all possible! We appreciate her for her care and concern for the families of Pine Ridge!

Wopila Tanka!

Dear Chris and Donors of Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation,

We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the Christmas gifts and donations to the children and families served by Lakota Oyate Wakanyeja Owicakiyapi “LOWO,” during this holiday season. Your time, energy and thoughtful consideration in providing assistance to our families is the ultimate act of spirituality! The happiness of the children in receiving Christmas gifts is immeasurable!

Through your generosity, we have gratefully received monetary donations for utility support, non-perishable food items, coats, clothing and electric heaters. These donations have enhanced the quality of life for many families who would have otherwise suffered serious deprivation.

In addition, Lakota Oyate Wakanyeja Owicakiyapi “LOWO” staff would like to recognize Chris’s work in coordinating the donor network that provides for the holiday needs of our families. We realize that the gifts we receive would not be possible without her advocacy, support and compassion! Wopila Tanka–Great Thanks to you Chris, and Friends of the Pine Ridge Reservation!

Very Sincerely,

Emily Iron Cloud-Koenen

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people — appalling, and largely ignored — compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson.
