Thank You Letters from Oglala Lakota College

Dear Chris and Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation;

Another new year has gotten off to a good start, thanks to all your generous donations of school supplies for our nursing students. We have admitted the largest class ever, 21 with 2 returning in the spring. Our second year class of 11 will graduate this coming June. The students are so appreciative of the rolling backpacks, highlighters, flash drives and binders.

So many of our students are single mothers and any help with reducing their school expenses is helpful. We currently have most of the students, all female, from Oglala Sioux tribe but also from Rosebud Sioux, Standing Rock Sioux, and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes.

We have graduated over 240 students, about 8-10 per year and most work for Indian Health Service on their reservations but also in the surrounding rural towns in both South Dakota and Nebraska.

We are anticipating a continued increase in numbers but probably won’t admit more than 20 per year because of faculty and clinical agency limitations. Again, many thanks for all your support through the years.

Pilamaya.

Dear Donors to OLC Academic & Public Library:

We will never be able to thank you enough!!! I want to tell you all how much you mean to us in this library. Your donations of books, office supplies and encouraging words are priceless. When you send your books to us it makes a difference in each person’s life on our reservation. We are able to add to our Build Your Own Library Program by gifting books to all the children on the reservation!! These children and family members, from newborn to senior citizen are recipients of your time and generosity.

As hard as we try to thank each of you, we know some are missed, so from us to all of you, we hope you have a peaceful new year and we send best wishes and happy days to all of you and your families and thank you for all you do!!!

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people — appalling, and largely ignored — compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson.
