Thank You from Anpetu Luta Otipi

Dear Friends of Pine Ridge,

Anpetu Luta Otipi is the comprehensive substance abuse program for the Oglala Lakota Nation. We offer counseling services for substance abuse and addiction to the youth and adults of the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Our services include referral, assessment, residential, outpatient and aftercare counseling. We are the second largest Tribe in the United States and are funded by Indian Health Service at 30% of our need. We live and work in one of the United States’ poorest counties with an 80% unemployment rate.

All of your contributions are greatly appreciated and have provided our people who come to our program not only with much needed clothing and personal supplies but also with the knowledge that you care about their effort to achieve sobriety. Showing the newly recovering addict that you care is a gift that is immeasurable in terms of contributing to their self-esteem and changing their lifestyle.

Our heartfelt thanks to all of you who take time out of your day and your own personal funds to help us achieve our dream that somday all of our Oyate (people) will “Live in a Red Day.”

Wopila (thank you),

Terryl Blue-White Eyes

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people — appalling, and largely ignored — compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson.
