Thank You Letter from Little Wound School

Dear Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation:

I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you for your generous donations to our library. Our students live in a very isolated area, and as adolescents they will find ways to entertain themselves.

The books donated certainly benefit our students academically, and in many cases reading may create an even greater influence. Your donations may simply prevent a young person from getting into trouble, or perhaps even provide an idea or inspiration to set and achieve a positive goal.

Your generosity and concern are greatly appreciated by the school staff and the students. Once again, thank you very much. Pilamaya Mitakuyasin

Sincerely,

Deb Legros

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people — appalling, and largely ignored — compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson.
