Wounded Knee District School is a PreK-8 school located in Manderson undergoing tremendous change. FoPRR is partnering with this school on many fronts in its efforts to make significant improvements in the education of children on Pine Ridge Reservation.
This is a team effort and there are countless ways you can help, large and small. Even something as simple as mailing an envelope full of band-aids or a few zippers will help. If you have any questions, or if you have a group that is seeking a project that would be helpful, please ask me!

Donate Nonperishables for the Emergency Food Pantry
Pine Ridge Reservation is a food desert and the nearest regular-sized grocery store is 80 miles away. Most families have no transportation and 100% of the students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Feeding America will make a monthly delivery for the families but it does not cover all of the emergency food needs.
You can help feed a family in food crisis by donating nonperishable foods such as nut butters, canned fish, powdered eggs, canned fruits and vegetables, applesauce cups, fruit cups, 100% fruit juice, powdered milk, shelf-stable liquid milk, almond milk, soy milk, coffee, tea, beans and legumes, soups, tomato products, pasta and grains, non-sugary cereals, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, bullion, spices, flour, yeast, baking soda, baking powder, cooking oil, etc. to the school’s food bank.
Feminine hygiene products, toiletries, toilet tissue, plastic wrap/foil/zip lock bags, first aid supplies, and cleaning products are welcome as well. Please consider Amazon’s Subscribe & Save program to send an automatic monthly donation of any food item. Also welcome are hotel toiletries so remember to bring those home with you when you travel!
If you’d like to make a monetary donation for food, you can mail a check or use the PayPal button below and please include a note designating your donation is for the food pantry.
Donate Books for the Students
It’s so important for the WKDS kids to have reading materials that engage them. If you’d like to donate books to Wounded Knee District School, click here. (Please do not send encyclopedias, used textbooks, old magazines.)
Donate Books for the Parent Resource Center
If you’d like to help build a resource library for the parents’ use in the school’s Parent Resource Center, click here for more info. Magazine subscriptions on any topic for the resource center are also welcome and you can order free gift subscriptions with your airline miles!
Donate Infant and Toddler Supplies
You can help WKDS families tremendously by donating infant and toddler diapers, formula, food, blankets and clothing (purchased or knitted/crocheted/sewn for newborn through preschool age), and all types of supplies (bottles, bathtubs, toiletries, toys, etc.). Their most urgent needs are always diapers in size 3 to 6 and formula.
Donate Classroom Supplies
The WKDS classrooms can always use bulletin board supplies, puzzles, math and other educational games, school supplies, art supplies (foam stickers, chenille sticks, craft sticks, glue sticks, decorative scissors, pom poms, googlie eyes, construction paper, etc.), dry erase markers, manipulatives, printer paper, holiday decorations, etc.
Donate Student Store Incentives
WKDS students earn Warrior Bucks for participating in class, exhibiting Lakota values, completing homework, and good behavior. They can spend those bucks at the Warrior Store.
The school can use donations of all sorts of small items for the store: art supplies, craft supply kits, matchbox cars, greeting cards and stationery, bubbles, paper dolls, jump ropes, sketchbooks and drawing pencils, watercolor sets, coloring books, glitter glue pens, activity books, toiletries for the teens, zippered cases, hair accessories, small games and toys, index cards, fun pencils and gel pens, novelty erasers, stickers, notebooks, journals, Mad Libs, university branded pencils/pens, and more.
Donate Sewing and Quilting Supplies
The school has opened a Parent Resource Center and can use sewing machines, irons, fabric, buttons, zippers, all types of sewing and quilting notions and jingle cones which will allow parents to construct quilts and clothing as well as dance regalia for the kids in the school’s Lakota Dance Club. They can use all types of fabric, and this is a year-round need (cotton, denim, satin, fleece, juvenile prints, flannel, etc.) in 3-4 yard pieces, but small pieces for quilting are welcome as well.
Donate New Shoes, Socks, Underwear, Clothing
The kids of all ages, PreK through 8th grade can use new shoes, snow boots, socks, underwear, thermal underwear, clothing, warm coats, hats, scarves, mittens and gloves and this is a year round need, especially during the winter when temps can dip to 30 below zero. All sizes (through adult) needed!
Donate Laundry Soap
The school is installing a small laundromat in its Parent Resource Center and it will be available as incentive to parents who participate in their children’s education. Most students’ families do not own a washer and dryer. The school can use donations of laundry soap and fabric softener sheets as well as stain removers. These are year round needs. High-efficiency (HE) laundry detergents are not required.
Donate Door Prizes for Family Nights
The school holds monthly community building Family Nights during which there are various activities for the children and their parents. To encourage participation, the school provides door prizes. Small appliances, large packs of toilet paper and paper towels, space heaters, bed pillows, bed linens, bath towels, and other household items, are all appreciated donations. Contact me if you have questions or need more suggestions.
Donate Sports Equipment
The school can use lots of sports equipment for the students, namely basketballs, basketball pumps, soccer balls, volleyballs, baseballs, bats, gloves, bases, and volleyball nets. Thanks for your support!
