Re-MemberRe-Member is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Established in 1998, Re-Member brings more than 1,000 volunteers to Pine Ridge each year for week-long working vacations with an emphasis on cultural exchange. Re-Member believes that in addition to assisting the people of Pine Ridge with material goods, the strongest way to promote positive exchange in one of the poorest areas of the Unites States is to build relationships and its volunteers become advocates to stand in solidarity with the Oglala Lakota people. For the past several years, Re-Member’s main project was the manufacture and placement of bunk beds in homes. To date more than 2,500 bunk beds have been placed. In addition to this project, Re-Member is moving toward its ultimate goal of building new homes on Pine Ridge Reservation. In Re-Member’s Wawokiye project, which means “groups helping people stand,” volunteers go into homes of elders and the disabled to clean, repair, and fix up homes. Volunteers also participate in major home renovation and other work projects around Pine Ridge. Trips are one week in length and volunteers stay in two bunk houses that can accommodate up to 100 volunteers. Meals are provided by a kitchen staff, and volunteers assist in various tasks at the facility throughout the week. Evening programs and touring of Pine Ridge Reservation is also provided to provide volunteers with an enriching cultural experience and an in-depth understanding of not only the history of the Lakota people of Pine Ridge, but a sense of present day life on the Reservation. In addition to financial contributions, Re-Member is always in need of supplies to be used in its work projects of home repair, renovation and construction, as well as its bunk bed project. Donations of bedding should be brand new only, please. While Re-Member does distribute some winter clothing, it does not have the capacity or ability to handle large quantities of used clothing.
