Tusweca TiospayeTusweca Tiospaye (two-swe-cha tee-o-shpa-yea), located on the Pine Ridge Reservation, home of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, is a Native 501(c)(3) non-profit organization devoted to the promotion and strengthening of the Lakota language. Of the many hundreds of languages spoken in North America prior to European contact, only a handful, perhaps a dozen, can be considered viable enough today to survive. Lakota is one of them. Unfortunately, Lakota is dangerously close to extinction. Recent linguistic surveys, anecdotal evidence, and the 2000 US Census reveal that the situation for the Lakota language is very serious. Lakota speakers of all abilities, on and around the Lakota speaking reservations in North Dakota and South Dakota, amount to between 8,300 and 9,000 persons, which represents just 14% of the total Lakota population. Not only are Lakota speakers becoming fewer in number, they are also growing older. Today, the average Lakota speaker is nearly 65 years old. These existing Lakota speakers are dying and are not being replaced by new Lakota-speaking generations. Despite these obstacles, the Lakota language has a significant chance of being revitalized. Tusweca Tiospaye has been created to develop a strong, healthy, and prosperous environment in which Lakota wakanyeja (children) and their tiwahe (families) can learn and incorporate the Lakota language into their daily lives and you can help their efforts with your generous tax-deductible donations.
