OST Emergency Youth ShelterThe OST Emergency Youth Shelter provides temporary refuge for girls and boys ages 12 through 17. The shelter is a 10-bed home and the children stay from one to 30 days. They are placed in the shelter because they may have been abused, neglected, or have run away from difficult situations. The children are usually referred by social services agencies and typically come in with only the clothes they are wearing. A director and four residential care providers staff the shelter and guide and mentor the children. During their stay at the shelter, the children receive mental health evaluations and counseling, including equine therapy. Most of the children attend school during the day and while residing at the shelter participate in traditional Lakota activities, i.e. Lakota language classes, Inipis (sweat lodges) and Lowanpis (traditional ceremonies).
